President's Message

It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down. We were so lucky to have a beautiful
smoke-free three months to enjoy all of the beauty Truckee living can offer. For me, this
summer was extra special because we welcomed our baby granddaughter, Blake, in
July.

A BIG “Thank You” to Shirley Phelan for opening her beautiful home on August 18th for
our program meeting, and to Cathy Leibow for organizing it. We had a great turnout
and it was such a lovely opportunity to socialize in person!

As we move into Fall, I encourage you to explore our new website, sitd.info, which is up
and running. Thank you to Katy Jones for all of her hard work in setting it up and
showing us how the new site works. In case you missed our August meeting where she
ran through the site, you should have also received a detailed email from Katy
explaining how you can log in and sign up for events. If you have any questions, please
reach out to Katy or Marion Thatch. Also, if you are interested in helping periodically
updating our website and keeping it fresh and informative, please contact Marion.

Work is also underway for Soroptishop which will be held November 17 at the Truckee
Recreation Center. This is one of our two biggest fundraisers (the other being our Wine
Tasting and Restaurant Faire). There are plenty of ways to help, either leading up to the
event, or on date of the event, whichever fits best with your schedule. Openings for
both of these special events are listed on our committee list which can be accessed
here. Please feel free to contact me or Cathy Leibow if you can help, or if have any
questions regarding any of the listed positions.
Other key dates to note are listed in this newsletter. And, for more informal social
events, don’t forget to join our SITD Facebook page!

I hope you continue to enjoy this fabulous weather!

August Program Meeting

Everyone had a wonderful time at our Program Committee Meeting on August 18th. We had a very good turnout.....23 people were in attendance - a combination of new and old members. There was a quiz on "How Well Do I Know SITD" that had people engaged and teaming up for answers. The potluck provided by the Board was fabulous and we had plenty of time to socialize.
Laura Mohun provided an interesting overview of our pillars. We discussed the open committee positions and then had various members talk about what is involved in their committees. Everyone stepped up and signed up for committee positions so thank you all!
If you missed the event and are still interested in participating on a committee, please reach out to Cathy Leibow at cleibow2@gmail.com.
And a big shout out to Shirley Phelan for hosting!!!

Thought of the Day
The August Meeting's Thought of the Day was provided by Kathleen Raber
August BeeBuzz

I am SITD’s President-Elect and currently work full-time as a Senior Vice President of Concierge Services for Leverage Concierge. I have been married for 42 years and have a 32-year old daughter who lives in Brooklyn and a 30-year old son who lives in the East Bay, with my 3-year old grandson. We also have a mini-golden doodle dog named Cooper. We built our house in Tahoe Donner in 1999 and moved up here full-time in 2014 when my husband retired.
I grew up in New York and met my husband in college. After my graduation, we drove cross-country in our ’67 Mustang with our cat Berkeley. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and Mathematics but couldn’t find a full-time teaching job when I arrived in California, so I took a job at Intel. In 1985, we had our first son Joshua, who was born premature and only lived for 2 months.
Then, in 1987, we had Jason who was full-term, but born with Down Syndrome and a heart defect. I negotiated part-time work with Intel after Jason was born but needed to find childcare for him. It was an incredibly frustrating experience, especially when one provider asked me when he would outgrow the Down Syndrome! I decided then to start a business helping people find childcare and targeted local employers so that this would be offered as an employer-sponsored benefit. I grew the business to include elder care, pet care, concierge and errand running. Unfortunately, Jason had heart surgery when he was 2 years old and
didn’t survive. I started my business because of him so I decided to quit Intel and focus on it 100%. I sold my business to a company in San Diego and now work for them.

I love to travel, hike, swim, kayak, bake, read and I’m learning golf! I’m very excited to be your President next year!

Four Scholarship Winners Honored at SITD Business Meeting

We were very pleased that we could honor and meet in person four of the seven SITD scholarship recipients at our August meeting. They are (L-R) Moria Gion, Rachael Garness, Zarelli Villa, and Elizabeth Sweeney.
Moira is getting her certificate in auto mechanics, Rachel is attending Sierra College to begin her journey to be a psychologist, Zarelli's next goal is to start in Physical Therapy program and Elizabeth Sweeney is headed to UC- Santa Cruz on the path to becoming a veterinarian.
These are hardworking women, and we congratulate them on their ambitions and accomplishments.
Certificate of Recognition to SITD from Career Technical Education (CTE)

Dr. Todd Wold, Manager of College & Careers CTE & Adult Education, attended our July 14th business meeting to recognize SITD as an Outstanding Industry Partner in 2021-2022.

Chris Seitz and Pam English taught a culinary class at Truckee High School to three sections of the Culinary Program taught by Dana Frank. The objectives were to make, cook and eat banana muffins and to discuss career opportunities for as a chef and food scientist. SITD also presented our Dream It Be It (DIBI) Program last fall to at-risk youth, primarily girls, at Truckee High School. We spent the day with 12 youth from their Wellness Center, exploring careers, techniques for overcoming obstacles, identifying personality traits related to successful career choices. Joyce Brady (former SITD member), Joan Kreamer, Pam English, Marion Thatch and Chris Seitz were the program leaders. We plan to offer the program again next fall.

We also participated in the round table discussions with CTE and local industry leaders to determine how best to mentor high school students toward careers, including the trades. Todd presented the certificate to President, Denise Trani-Morris.
Todd noted that they are interested in volunteers who can speak to their students about their career paths. He said it could be informal. Please reach out to me if you are interested in mentoring or discussing your career with high school students in Truckee.
