  • We will be starting a speaker series on the 3rd Thursday of each month beginning in February. If you have any ideas for local speakers, please contact Shirley Phelan at arington@gmail.com.
  • Our District 5 Winter meeting will be held on Saturday, February 10th at The Courtyard Marriott, 6855 S. Virginia St. Reno. Mark your calendars….our goal will be to represent SITD with the largest attendance!
  • March 16th is our annual CBW event; plan to attend our awards ceremony which will celebrate some exceptional local women
  • Work has already begun on our largest fundraiser, our “Wine Tasting” event. Mark you calendar for June 1st (all hands on deck)
Thank you to all the members who have stepped up and joined committees, whether as an Advisor, Chair, CIT, or Member. Please remember that, as a SITD member, it is your responsibility to participate in at least two committees. We need everyone’s participation so we can achieve even greater results for the second half of our fiscal year! Contact Shirley at
arington@gmail.com for information on which positions we need to fill.

Toys for Tots
Happy Holidays!
The Toy Drive has just come to a successful completion! Thanks to the strong backs of the volunteers, more than 400 children in Truckee were smiling on Christmas Day!
The cars started lining up at the Truckee Rec and Park Center at 8:00am to receive their allocated toys, coats and food gift cards with lots of smiling faces and grateful hearts.
Many thanks to all who helped bring Christmas cheer! Whether it was with your time, your gifts, your monetary donations or even space in your home, it takes all of us to deliver on this very fulfilling project.
Special thanks to Judy and Lynette for allowing us to store in your homes. Angela for your guidance. Lynette for your shopping expertise. Laura, Kim, Pam, Teri, Brady, Jeannie, Philippa, Angela, and Chris for monitoring the boxes and bringing the haul in. Thanks to Lil for bringing in her team to do the heavy lifting of sorting and all of the sorters (and their family members) as well. Extra thanks to Philippa's daughter and granddaughter and Angela's granddaughter for handing out stuffed animals, stocking stuffers, and wrapping paper to each family. A round of applause to all who helped that I may not have called out here! They say it takes a village to raise a child, and today we got to witness our village raise the spirits of many children at this most festive time of year.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a fantastic new year. I'll be seeing you in 2025.

CAS Applications Due February 10th
Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner (SITD) is accepting applications for Career Advancement Scholarships for Women. Each scholarship is for up to $4000 for women who are enrolled in training or education to improve their career opportunities. These scholarships are designed to fill a gap post high school for women who want to enhance their career opportunities with additional training or education. Apply now on-line at www.SITD.info. The application is available in Spanish and English and is due by February 10, 2024.
These scholarships are available because of the generous support of Martis Camp Foundation, the Truckee Airport District and Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner supporters.
SITD President, Cathy Leibow, enthusiastically said, “We have seen the value further education and training can have on women’s ability to support themselves and their families, whether it be to get on-line certification for paralegal training, enter an EMT program, upgrade skills in a current job or finish college.”
SOLT - Giving Season
For many, December is Giving Season. But as Soroptimist, our Giving Season is every day. The needs of the women and girls we serve are present and very real every day. I am continually humbled when I consider the generosity of the members of SITD, that generosity shown through giving your time, your talents and your monetary contributions. The positive impact on our community is now rippling through generations. When collectively magnified with District, Region, Federation and global generosity, I can only say, ‘Well done, Soroptimist.’ But there is always so much more to do.
Our effectiveness is enhanced through our fundraising, notably our annual Wine Tasting and Restaurant Faire, Soroptishop and See’s Candy sales. We also have very generous sponsors and donors supporting our programs and scholarships. Another, often underutilized, source of funding is through Grants. A plethora of Grants are available through local community sources and also through our own organization, at both the Region level with SNR Endowment Grants and the Federation level with Soroptimit Club Grants for Education and Empowerment.
Being able to write a compelling grant, one that bubbles up to the top of a stack of applicants, is a skill we as leaders and potential leaders (that would be every single SITD member) should have. Grant writing reflects a deep understanding of who we are as Soroptimist, of what we do and why we do what we do. In short, it is our Mission in action.
SIA is helping us develop this leadership skill by offering an online workshop titled Soroptimist Club Grants: Crafting a Successful Application. The workshop date is Jan 9, 2024 at 4:00PM PST. Free online registration is now open. Our club could certainly benefit from additional financial support for our Dream Programs and our Big Goal Accelerator Projects.
Ladies, during this season of giving, may we all be blessed to be a blessing.
Made it Happen December 2023
"This year's Soroptishop was a huge success thanks to the efforts of Pati Johnson, Kim Polites, Kathleen Raber and all of the volunteers. It takes a village to put on an event like this, so this month's Made it Happen award goes to the entire Soroptimist team. Congratulations on a job well done!" – Cathy Leibow
Bee Buzz December 2023
Lynette Hipkins

Life began for me in Walla Walla, Washington. When I was four years old, my missionary parents transported their young family (via freighter ship) to Java, Indonesia. My youth was spent in Southeast Asia, including attending high school in Singapore. From there I moved to Michigan where I obtained an AA degree in secretarial science and upon completion of my college the family moved again, this time to SoCal. My degree took me into the corporate world as an Administrative Assistant which quickly became boring and tedious for me, so I made the decision to attend cosmetology school to become a hairstylist. That career path took me into the salon world where I also had the opportunity to work in TV and movies, with traveling royalty, politicians, actors and rockstars! Life in LA lost some of its glow, which led me to Murphys, in the Sierra foothills, and that is where I met my future husband, a Brit who hailed from Tahoe at the time. If you ever told me I’d live in the mountains, I would have said, “have you lost your mind?” As I am a beach person through and through! When my father married David and I he said “you know you are marrying a tropical maiden!” My beauty career continued in Truckee for over 20 years, which I found very fulfilling. My love of travel began early and my husband and I spend time each spring in Maui…mostly for me to thaw out and have my much needed ocean “fix”. We also enjoy visiting family in the UK as well as other destinations abroad. My interests also include music, art, theatre, movies, fashion and interior design. I have now lived in Truckee for 23 years…longer than anywhere else in this nomadic life of mine!
Thought for the Day December 2023
Presented by SITD Member, Keri Harvey
“The Chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you,
as perfect, as unspoiled, as if you had never wasted or misapplied a single moment in all your life.
You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose.”
- Arnold Bennett
