On March 14, we will be honoring our award and scholarship recipients, including, “Career, Advancement, Scholarship“ winners, “Live your Dream,“ and the "Violet Richardson" awardees for high school super volunteers. The keynote speaker is Kim Bateman, Dean of Sierra College/Tahoe Truckee. We will also be honoring our “Woman of the Year,” Megan Seifert, from Headwaters Science Institute. A lot of behind the scenes work goes into our Celebrating Best for Women event, from drafting the applications, promoting the scholarships and reviewing each application. Hats off to our committee members, including Phillipa Nigg, Nancy Wallis, Lynette Powell and Marion Thatch. And a special thank you to Joan Kreamer and Pam English for promoting and organizing our “Celebrating Best for Women” event. This year it will be held at the Glenshire Clubhouse on March 14, 5:45-7:30 p.m. Please try to join us.
Also, on March 2, Kathleen Raber is once again hosting the Teen Closet Baby Shower at her home from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. You can sign up on our website, www.sitd.info. Please bring an unwrapped gift and the items needed are listed on our website.
If you have been unable to make some of our business meetings, we now have them available via Zoom! Thank you to Katy Jones for setting this up. When you RSVP to the meeting, you will see the Zoom Business meeting link. Also, please remember to fill out a proxy form! Proxy forms are good for up to 180 days and allow us to ensure we have a quorum at our business meetings so we can vote on the important matters that come before the membership, including grant requests. To access the proxy form simply log onto our website, go to “Our Club,” then to “members only,” then to “Member Happenings.” The proxy form will be on the left.
We have been able to make several significant grants in our community to help women and girls in our community. Thank you to Charlene Simmons and the Grant Review Committee for their work in reviewing grant requests and making thoughtful recommendations.
And in case you missed it, we inducted ten new members at our February business meeting! See their pictures and names in the articles below. Please introduce yourself to them. Clearly exciting times for our club!
The baby shower will be held on March 2nd at Kathleen Raber's house at 15058 Berkshire Circle (Glenshire) from 5:30 -7:30 PM.
Our club has supported the teen parents with baby items needed for over 20 years. At the baby shower we each bring useful unwrapped items that are needed for the children of parents who find themselves stuck in Truckee and need help. Cindy Maciel and others from the day care program will talk about the STEPP program and Kathleen will have prepared appetizers for us to enjoy.
Suggested gifts are listed on the website when you RSVP.
Celebrating the Best for Women is coming up in a few weeks on March 14th. This is our annual celebration of women in our community, including the Woman of Distinction for a woman who has served women and girls for years in our community, the Violet Richardson Award for a high school girl who volunteers for her community, our 4 enterprising Live your Dream winners and new this year our Career Advancement scholarships awardees.
It will be an inspiring evening. Our Keynote speaker is Kim Bateman, who is Dean of Sierra College/Truckee-Tahoe. And 11-year-old Coco Lowe will sing with her brother accompanying her on the guitar.

Please join us. Please RSVP by March 5th on our website www.sitd.info.
Twice a year, the Districts in our Region, Sierra Nevada (SNR) meet to share ideas, plan and get to know each other better. The theme for this meeting was Leadership. Districts 5 and 6 combined on February 18th for a Zoom meeting.
We are in District 5 and our District Director is Holly Nash. We have 8 clubs in our District. Our SITD club delegates are Diane Venezia and Loretta Mullins. The delegates and president are expected to attend SNR meetings and all club members are invited. SITD President, Denise Trani-Morris, District 6 Director, Elaine Cassell, and SNR Governor, Lisa Fitzgerald attended the meeting with many other delegates, presidents and members.
eWe were delighted that Lisa Barr, Membership Coordinator, inducted 10 new members into SITD on February 9th. The eight women inducted in person (L-R) are Kim Polites, Keri Harvey, Hawley Kobayashi, Nicole Ryan, Debbie Quement, Tanya Barron, Lydia Carillo, Kitty Gannon. Marie Casey and Jennifer Whitman were inducted virtually.
Introducing Tanya Barron. I have been a Truckee resident since the mid-nineties and have worn many hats throughout my life. I was raised in Saratoga, in the South Bay Area. A beautiful area, but I knew I wanted something different.
I fell in love with Tahoe while visiting in the summer months after taking a plunge in Lake Tahoe. The water was crisp and clear and it suited me perfectly. My boyfriend at the time convinced me to come to Truckee in the middle of winter, during a snowstorm. While sipping tomato soup at OB’s restaurant I felt as if I belonged and knew I would be moving there. I rented a place shortly after that and made Truckee my home.
Truckee is not only beautiful, but it offers a lot of my favorite sports. I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, wakeboarding, yoga, and paddleboarding. The community has so much to offer from the Round House, Sierra College, Truckee Community Theater, amazing restaurants, and the night sky is a sight to see.
Currently, I am a realtor with Dickson Realty, and a financial consultant for the Small Business Development Center. (A no-cost access for entrepreneurs seeking solutions for their businesses.) I teach small businesses from here to the Sacramento area on how to set up and run the finances of their businesses.
I am currently very active in the working world, but now that my kids, Keiran and Keanna, are officially adults, I am ready to get back to community work.
Although I love that the Soroptimist is geared towards women & girls, the main reason I chose to join the Soroptimists is the mission of improving people’s lives. I am a firm believer there is always room for growth, but sometimes people do not have the tools quite yet. Showing compassion towards others leads to improvement not only for the recipient, but also for the givers.
Some other reasons I decided to join the Soroptimists is a sense of unity towards a common goal, money being used towards humanitarian efforts, spending my time on purpose rather than solely entertainment, to foster more compassion in my heart, to become more aware of the struggles in the world, to grow as an individual, and for the social networking aspect as well.
I love people and I love to serve, so it is a perfect fit!
“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places” ---- Ernest Hemingway
COVID-19 had broken many non-profits, globally, but SITD is stronger than ever, with such an amazing growth in membership. I want to thank all of our members for their generous hearts.
SITD’s biggest fundraiser, our annual Wine Tasting and Restaurant Faire, is just three short months away. Now is the time for all of us to band together in seeking donors, sponsorships, and silent auction items. Your help is also needed in spreading the word via social media. Both paper and digital ‘save the date’ flyers are now available. Let’s make sure all of Truckee and beyond are invited to our June 10th event! Coordinators are Susan Horst and Marie Strassburger.
Prior to approaching a potential Sponsor, please check the spreadsheet sent to you by the Silent Auction committee on Feb 9th, to be sure that we are not duplicating efforts. Also, please let Pati Johnson know who you plan to solicit.
The letter and registration form can be found on our club's website. The form outlines the Sponsorship levels and benefits our Sponsors receive for their support. And Sponsors can sign up and pay at https://sitdwine.givesmart.com/
