August 2022 Newsletter

President's Message

I hope you are all enjoying your summer! For many of our wonderful club members, their club work continues throughout the summer and to them we say a big “thank you!“

Work on our wonderful club website continues, and Katy Jones will be explaining it at our August Business Meeting.  Needless to say, a lot of work went into it, and I think you will be surprised by all of its wonderful features.  Everything you need, from minutes to agendas to sign ups and stories will be on our website!

We also have a program meeting scheduled for 5 PM on August 18, 2022 at Shirley Phelan’s home. Please make sure to sign up and bring your favorite beverage (the Board will be providing the food). Not only will this be a social event, but we will review and explain the open positions on our various committees. So, even if you are on a committee or two, please come for the fun!  Also, please do not forget to join (and periodically check) our SITD social group on Facebook for other informal activities that our club members are planning.

Finally, I was able to attend the SIA 47th Virtual Biennial Convention July 22-23, 2022. I was struck by the global impact of SIA and development of a global voice. If you have a moment, I encourage you to visit the SIA website, soroptimist.org.

- Denise

Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region Development Retreat
Dig Deep, SDR 2022 Recap
-written by Loretta Mullins

The Soroptimist Development Retreat (SDR) was held at the Atlantis Hotel in Reno on July 29-30th. and was attended by five of our members.
There were workshops that ranged in content from helping club presidents, president elects, treasurers and social media reps gather information on their roles and sharing their own experiences.
Other workshops focused on areas different clubs are involved in: The Live Your Dream Program, Dream it Be It, and the Trafficking of women and girls (which is a major problem on the I80 corridor). There was information shared regarding increasing and retaining membership. Our very own, Susan Horst, was a presenter on Our Four Pillars.
Sunday’s brunch ended quite lively. There was a panel presentation on the Dream Big Campaign with a $10,000 matching donation challenge given by a presenter. By the end of the brunch, almost $8000 more had been raised in the room!
Mark your calendars for our Fall District 5 Meeting to be held in charming Quincy on October 28th – 29th.

Clearing the Confusion:
SI Conventions, SIA Conventions, SNR Conferences, Soroptimist Development Retreats

Soroptimist International (SI), our umbrella organization, is a global volunteer movement with a network of around 72,000 club members in 121 countries. Its advocacy work and on-the-ground projects directly contribute to helping women and girls access their human rights around the World. SI hosts a fabulous Convention every two years. SI’s 2023 Convention will be held in Dublin, Ireland.
Each Soroptimist club belongs to one of five SI Federations:  Africa, Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, The Americas, and South East Asia Pacific. Each of these Federations hosts a Convention in SI’s off years. SIA’s 2022 Convention was held virtually this past weekend and featured Nobel Laureate Malala Yousasfzai as a keynote speaker.

We are part of Soroptimist International of The Americas (SIA) which is divided into Regions. Our Region is Sierra Nevada Region (SNR). Regions host annual Conferences and Soroptimist Development Retreats. These are held at the Atlantis Resort in Reno. Our Conference was held earlier this year and our Soroptimist Development Retreat (SDR) will be held this coming weekend, July 30th and July 31st. Our Garden Party theme encourages members to ‘Dig Deep’ as we grow and learn more about Soroptimist, our clubs and ourselves while having fun doing so! See you there.
