Melissa is a single parent of one child. Her career goal is to become a teacher and revolves around making a positive impact on the lives of students and fostering their love for learning. She has already achieved a bachelor’s degree and our grant will help her finish her goal.

Jennifer had the opportunity to work in an Early Learning Center, work summer camps for the School District and Boys and Girls Club! She loves children and wants to make a difference in the community where she was born and raised! She is a working mom/wife, with two jobs, working towards her AA degree.

She is currently enrolled in a Fashion Merchandising Certificate online program at Parsons. She wants to finally pursue her dreams of working in design.

Career Advancement Scholarship Awardees
 
JESSICA DELGADO-MORA
Jessica is a young single mother of one who has started her medical career as a Certified Medical Assistant. She found herself calm and capable in emergency situations and realized she could help others. Jessica is receiving the Career Advancement Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to complete her degree in Nursing from the Truckee Airport District.
 
MARIELA BOLANOS
Mariela Bolanos is the mother of four children who works for Truckee Tahoe School District as a Library Technician for the past 17 years. She has great interest in working with special education students, an area of much needed influx of new committed teachers. She hopes to complete her degree in 2026. We wish her great success as we award her Scholarship of $5,000 from We Love Eyes.
 
CRYSTAL GARCIA
Crystal Garcia is a young single mother of a 3-year-old daughter. After high school she got her Certified Nurse Assistant license and worked at our local hospital in Behavioral Health. Because of seeing her parents work so hard she has been inspired to seize the opportunity at this time while she is still young enough to make a difference to obtain her nursing license. She is nearly there with one more term to completion. She wants to acknowledge her parents for helping her care for her daughter while is attends night school. She is unable to be here tonight because she is there at required night school now. She is being awarded $5,000.
 
COREEN YOUNG
Coreen grew up in a low-income chaotic household here in town. Her mother was ill and passed from breast cancer in 2022. It was during this time she developed her desire to go into the health care field. She Is currently attending Sierra College and will be transferring to University of Nevada to pursue a Bachelor of Science of Nursing degree. She currently works at Tahoe Forest Health System as a Medical Assistant full time. She has excelled in school and relishes the opportunity to immerse herself in the challenging field of medical science and patient care to become a nurse.
Coreen is being awarded $4,000 from the Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner to chase down her dream of providing excellent nursing care in this community.
 
STEPHANY ALONZO
Stephany is a woman in her 20’s who currently works as an Asst. Sect. at a local church. She will be using her scholarship to attend DONA International School where upon completion of the training, she will be the first bilingual doula in the area. From this platform she will be able to assist other women in this high intensity time of birthing.
Stephany is being awarded $1,000 to obtain her Doula Certification.
 
MALENIE CORRAL
Malenie is a previous awardee from 2023. She is proceeding and only has 3 units to complete her dual credentials for Elementary Education and Special Education. She currently is supporting herself by serving tables at Martis Camp on weekends and working as a substitute teacher in the Truckee School District. She looks forward with enthusiasm to getting her first teaching job here in Truckee in the near future. Malenie is being presented with the Career Advancement in the amount of $1,000.
 
VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD (For girls 14-17 who volunteer in the community)
 
Bryn Kidd is a junior at Truckee High School. Her volunteer activities are centered around the love of reading and her desire to have a public and free place that connects teens from diverse backgrounds and provides a safe and enriching environment that fosters inclusion, healthy relationships, and fun activities.
She requested that her $300 for charity be given to Friends of the Library.
 
 
Vallerie Laguna is a junior at North Tahoe high school. Vallerie’s volunteer activities are centered around being a role model and advocate for authentic cultural representation for the Latinx community. Vallerie has realized how important it is to have marginalized groups seen and represented in our community. In 2022, she co-founded the Latinx Club and is the current Latinx Club president. Vallerie organized the first and annual celebration of Latinx Culture at the Tahoe Backyard Event in Kings Beach. Vallerie looks forward to the opportunity to volunteer as a counselor for Tech Trek Women in Science at UC Davis this summer.
Her $300 for charity will be given to AAUW-Nevada Branch.
 
 
 
Additional CAS Recipient
On Friday, March 15th CAS recipient, Michelle Salas Nevarez, was able to meet and have lunch with Dr. Tanya Gill, of WE LOVE EYES Foundation, along with Chris Seitz and Teri Dean Boelk. She was given a $5000 check on behalf of SITD funded by Dr. Gill.
 
Michelle is currently at Sierra College and will be transferring to a four-year college to complete her major in communications with a long term goal of going to law school. Michelle was unable to attend the CBW due to prior commitments.
