The name, Soroptimist, is coined from the Latin words, soror meaning sister and optima – the best. The translation is “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best.
Founded in 1971, Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner (SITD) provides volunteer services and financial support locally and internationally. We work to improve the lives of women and children (primarily girls), in an atmosphere of support, friendship and fun. We raise funds which are then donated to programs we support and organizations in need.
Chartered in 1921, Soroptimist International (SI) is a global women’s organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. More than 80,000 Soroptimists in about 130 countries and territories support community–based and global projects benefiting women and girls. The organization is particularly concerned with providing them access to education, as this is the most effective path to self-determination.
Soroptimist International has a seat at the United Nations and is consulted on matters affecting women and children across the world.
